  • Overview

    The Direct Access Coordinator position provides callers with appropriate physician and service information, and initiates appropriate physician and service referrals for BHC.  Must be able to manage multiple phone lines for discharges, admissions, room changes, and transfers.   Through coordination of efforts with clinical leaders, House Supervisors and unit coordinators appropriate updates are made in Allscripts Patient Flow by efficiently managing the movement of patients through the care delivery process, including different facility locations.. The coordinator is responsible for indexing orders submitted through Order Facilitator.  This coordinator is directly responsible for the activation of the STEMI process by notifying the Cardiac Catheterization team and physicians on call within two minutes of activation.  Maintaining daily admission logs for unit based quality improvement initiatives.   The coordinator will initiate and communicate trauma, Helipad and Zone Red bypass alerts. This includes local facilities and transport providers as well as BHC emergency department.  Facilitate transportation to and from other facilities via multiple methods (ambulance, air, etc). Direct Access Coordinator will maintain open communication with the House Supervisor in order to maintain accurate bed availability which includes departments at capacity (zone red), and environmental service needs.


    The person in this position works under general supervision, is responsible for various shifts, may be subject to over 40 hours per week and/or callback as required, and may also be required to remain on campus immediately before, during, and after severe weather and/or disasters.


    • High School Diploma or General Education Degree required
    • Minimum of one (l) year experience in dispatching emergency vehicles or in a customer service position
    • Basic knowledge of medical terminology
    • Good communication skills and ability to communicate clearly both in speech and writing
    • Proficient in basic computer skills
    • Able to work without relief for extended periods of time while remaining alert and focused on the duties of the job.
