  • Overview

    The Coding Auditor-Educator reviews/audits patient records for correct ICD-10-CM/PCS codes, CPT Codes, POA assignment and MS-DRG assignment, as applicable, according to established guidelines. Issues Coding “report card” quarterly to all coders. This position provides coding training and education. He/She audits accounts for ER Charging accuracy, if applicable.  The position performs RAC and other third party audit appeals, if applicable. He/She must be able to use tact and diplomacy when communicating with employees, physicians, administration, and public, under complex or emotional situations.


    The person in this position works under general supervision, is responsible for various shifts, may be subject to over 40 hours per week and/or callback as required, and may also be required to remain on campus immediately before, during, and after severe weather and/or disasters.


    • Graduation from Accredited Coding Program
    • Minimum of 5 years Inpatient and/or Outpatient coding experience
    • Must have experience in regulatory issues related to Medicare, and other third party payers as it relates to hospital and ambulatory coding and billingCertified Coding Specialist or Certified Coding Associate in good standing with AHIMA
    • MUST have high level of competence in coding ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT-4, knowledge of MS-DRGs, APCs, reimbursement methods for Medicare, CHAMPUS, Medicaid, other payers
    • Must be able to identify documentation opportunities and understand MS-DRG structures
    • Must be familiar with local medical review policies and correct coding initiative
    • Familiar with charge master and use of CDM for reference
    • Clinical knowledge gained through education or experience
    • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, medical terminology
    • Computer keyboarding skills and basic computer knowledge, Microsoft Word and Excel
    • Special Demands: High degree of accuracy
    • Must preserve confidentiality of health information
    • Knowledge of Medicare, State, Federal Regulatory requirements
