The Clinical Claims Liaison is responsible for cultivating compassionate, positive relationships with patients and families who may have experienced untoward outcomes or who have made claims of medical negligence against Baptist Health Care, its employees or physicians. The position’s primary role is to receive hand-off information from the clinical risk team and other areas regarding patients or families with potential complex claims of medical malpractice against the organization. The Claims Liaison will conduct further investigation for liability assessment, maintain appropriate communication with patient or family and other stakeholders and make recommendations for resolution of claim. This position may also assist in decisions regarding patient billing adjustments and service recoveries, and will be actively involved in the risk management patient/family disclosure and resolution program. This position primarily works with patients and families, who have not retained legal counsel, but may, under the direction of the Claims, Risk Financing Manager, work closely with legal counsel for those claims that are in litigation or where patients have retained counsel prior to litigation. He or she works independently and in conjunction with the Claims, Risk Financing Manager and Executive Director to resolve claims not yet in litigation. He or she is responsible for tracking claim expenses and works with the Manager to insure appropriate claim reserves are set. The position will not have independent settlement authority. The Clinical Claims Liaison will work closely with the clinical risk team and will assist with the Patient Grievance process. The Clinical Claims Liaison will conduct training and education for staff and physicians which may include malpractice trends, Amendment 7 discoverability, documentation in and out of the medical record and other topics as identified by the Manager and Executive Director. The person in this position works under general supervision, is responsible for various shifts, may be subject to over 40 hours per week and/or callback as required, and may also be required to remain on campus immediately before, during, and after severe weather and/or disasters.
