Overview

The Charge Nurse is a key player in the delivery of care consistent with the Recovery Model; such as assuring that staff is providing person centered care evidenced by choice, respect, dignity, partnerships, self-management, and full inclusion.  In this leadership position the Charge Nurse takes responsibility to set the stage in creating a culture that embraces all aspects of the Recovery Model and strategies to reduce Seclusion and Restraint. He/She creates a collaborative, non-punitive environment, and works through problems by communicating expectations to staff.  He/She is well versed in patients rights regarding care, privacy, safety, confidentiality of medical records, and the Baker Act, is a resource to staff and can clearly give direction and guidance. 

As a Registered Nurse he/she explains illness, symptoms, courses of treatment and hope for the future and begins to teach the individual about the use and benefits of personal recovery plans and relapse.  He/She informs the individual of the benefits of active treatment, including medication, and the intended and unintended effects and ensures that the individual is educated about choices/resources available.  Along with ensuring a safe environment for all, he/she develops with each individual a therapeutic relationship which is critical in the healing process free from inappropriate use of restraint and seclusion.  He/She should be able to demonstrate and role model the use of de-escalation and uses interpersonal skills to relax patients involved in potential conflict. A Charge Nurse is responsible for directing and overseeing the daily activities of the unit on an assigned shift and is responsible and accountable for directing and facilitating the flow of patient care activities of the department/area. Manages individualized, goal‑directed nursing care through the use of the nursing process and the principles of primary nursing, in accordance with departmental and hospital policies and procedures.

 

The person in this position works under general supervision, is responsible for various shifts, may be subject to over 40 hours per week and/or callback as required, and may also be required to remain on campus immediately before, during, and after severe weather and/or disasters.

Qualifications

  • Must have ASN degree or Nursing Diploma
  • One year clinical experience required, Two years preferred.
  • Current RN licensure in State of Florida
  • BLS
  • Demonstrated proficiency in acute care nursing, knowledge, and skills.
