Overview

Performs technical skills and provides assistance to surgeons, anesthesia personnel, registered nurses, and other professionals in the operating room. Performs similar duties in other areas of the center as assigned.  The Surgical Technologist works under the supervision of the registered nurse in delivering safe, effective care to the patient during the intra operative period. He/she effectively interacts with patients and health care team members, while maintaining the surgical department standards; participates in surgical procedures on patients of all age groups, pediatric through geriatrics: may assist in circulating duties under the direct supervision of a qualified Registered Nurse.  She/he is involved in disassembling, cleaning, sterilizing, and storage of procedure trays, instruments, equipment, and supplies according to prescribed procedures and aseptic techniques.  She/he carries out routine and assigned tasks of inspecting case carts, instruments, and supplies, storing items in the appropriate place in the department.  Responsible for preparation of sterile field for surgical case that includes instrumentation, supplies and equipment. Assists surgeon during procedure by passing correct instrumentation, anticipation of needed instrumentation, supplies, equipment. She/He maintains accurate immediate use sterilization logs/practices consistent with organization’s policy and procedures.  She/he utilizes surgical instrumentation knowledge to prepare instruments and equipment for the surgeon to perform the procedure that is scheduled.

 

The person in this position works under general supervision, is responsible for various shifts, may be subject to over 40 hours per week and may also be required to remain on campus immediately before, during, and after severe weather and/or disasters.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma and Graduate of a surgical technology program completion; Or have current LPN license or Military trained core man with medical background who has completed a surgical technology program.
  • Current licensure in the State of Florida if an LPN.
  • BLS through American Heart Association
  • Possesses a strong character and unyielding sense of integrity with a “surgical conscious”; Exceptional attention to detail and follow through very important; Possesses ability to move quickly without sacrificing quality and accuracy.
  • Ability to stand for long periods, strength to hold extremities, and/or instrument retractors for long periods.
  • Good memory, able to anticipate surgeon and patient needs well in advance.
  • Ability to read and understand the English language.
  • Instrument Tracking Computer software experience helpful.
